Maker Faire 2013

My very first Maker Faire experience here in the Bay Area happened quite by accident a couple of weeks ago. My friend Nidhi was looking for someone to give her company…and boy am I glad I went along because I was in Disneyland! To give you guys a little background, the Maker Faire is an annual festival which takes place in various cities here in the US and a few other countries. It’s a platform for hundreds of talented artists, craftsmen, scientists and engineers to show off their creations and for the public to interact with them first hand and buy their inventions! I’ve never seen such a large-scale celebration of creativity and innovation before!

The products ranged from Tapigami which are art installations created using masking tape (expect a future post on this), R2-D2 Robots, LED light installations to Kinetic Creatures which are adorable walking cardboard animals (expect a post on these soon too!). We discovered some really cool products and had a blast as you can see above :)!

Ply Products

For this post, I’d like to focus on the California based product which excited me the most: Ply Products.

The idea is simple.  Order these PLY90 connectors and screws from the Ply Products website, purchase plywood from your local hardware store (paint it if you wish) and get building anything you can possibly dream of!

Check out all the possibilities below…

Coffee Table
Coffee Table

Grow table

Bookshelves

Standing desk

PLY90 parts used to create DIY furniture

What excites me is the simplicity of the product and the endless possibilities it offers. You could produce your own custom furniture in a matter of a day, and feel proud to have built something for your home. What’s more, you can disassemble it if you’re moving or recycle the wood for a new creation.

Now that’s great design :).
